Is ArcheAge amazing?

I downloaded it last night and smacked mobs until level 11.  It looks like a good enough game, but is there anything amazing about it later on?  So far, it doesn't seem to stand out the way GW2 and ESO do.

Later on it gets rather rough. I suggest banning up together with someone like HoL or .38 special asap. Once you leave the safe zones it goes full pvp mode and you can not only be killed by the opposition but also by your allies. You will need friends if you hope to sirvive.

The game has some nice things to it, but my personal opinion was that it was as close to pay to win as a game with a plex style system could be *especially since the main method of getting gold was via trade runs, which requires farms outside protected lands that people are actively seeking.*  It also takes a ton of time to do anything as a free player, with the way the labor system is set up, making getting that 'plex substitute' harder as you need to order more stuff via the AH to support buying it.

Also, the game not having an account based justice system (not all characters need the same reputation, but the time served for a crime as an account wide deal would have been nice) made it far too easy to get off with alts committing crimes and then being deleted.

It did have some cool ideas, if you can survive the grind and other issues.  I just couldn't justify it being worth my time as a player who did not want to pay a sub at the time (a few dollars here and there I might have been willing, if the rest of the game had supported that and I continued to have fun... but that was not the case for me.)

Of course, this is all merely my opinion.  Others have enjoyed many things the game has to offer, but it just felt like a cash grab that Trion had no real control over (the Korean company forced them to avoid changing many things, for which they are sadly blamed... not that they did everything right, just it is what it is.)

The combat is a little dull compared to GW2 and ESO, but maybe that will be offset by the PvP chaos later.

It is nice to have lots of skills and hotkeys all loaded at the same time again.

I am not going to subscribe, so I'll see how far casual free-loading takes me.

I am still playing it.  There are parts that I really enjoy.  The pvp is fun, especially the naval battles but it is few and far between when you find a group to do them.  There was a mad rush for trade runs in the beginning and that has slowed as well.  XL games made some major mistakes along the way and it has cost them in the player base.  I think the important part is finding some wonderful people to run with.  They make the difference.  You need allies in the game.  I enjoy the farming aspect and trading but it does take time to do that and then you are not doing group things -so it is important to find a balance.

My initial thought was that Trion needed a softer roll-out as the queues made the game almost inaccessible.

My next observation was the game-play. Lots of button smashing and very little investment in the character. It felt more like an arcade game and if I had enough quarters, I would finish the story eventually.

To be fair, this game was aimed at the PvP player base coupled with player housing which if you were subbed you could acquire. All you had to do was be part of the mad dash for land at the onset of the game's launch to get some.

For me, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I joined up with 38, and have been just leveling casually free-to-play.

A PLEX system like AA's Apex will always mean a game is pay-or-grind-to-win, but that's totally reasonable.  If free-to-play casuals can dominate, then the game probably won't have a future.  We get what we pay for.

I may not stay for along just because I have other active interests right now.  If I we're looking for a game to go all-in and invest time into long-term development, I think AA would be good choice.

The combat is quite dull, though.  They need to get some dodges and sneaks, more like GW2 and ESO.  Actually,  what all games really need is to make their combat just like TERA's.

My Patron status runs out in 2 weeks since the launch package. I wont be renewing. Too much changed from what it was supposed to be. The RVR combat is pretty pointless and not fun since class balance hasn't been adjusted since alpha with Archers being OP. Combat is entirely gear dependent and the best gear is an RNG lottery with each ticket costing thousands. Trion seems to be doing everything in their power to anger as much as the community as it can with each "patch", which have mostly just been marketplace updates that were designed to exploit as much money as possible.  Hacking is an ongoing and rampant problem, and the only "fixes" implemented have banned more legit players than guilty ones. I did enjoy the boats and trade system at first, but in the end it was just boring. The game is very pretty, and Gliding is awesome. The crafting system is one of the best parts of the game, or I should say was one of the best parts of the game since pretty much all of it was changed. The only thing that kept me going was owning property, farming, and cooking for the guild. It was nice having a waterfront view to.

It's pretty much to be expected with every aftermarket game.  Those are two characteristics that the original audience seems to want.

I prefer SOME skill to go along with my combat, if you can win every fight without any challenge then something is wrong. And that wasn't the main point, yes many games have gear dependent combat, my main point was the RNG lottery. The best gear to get is the crafted gear, which when I say is an RNG Lottery, I'm not kidding. Your chances of getting ONE piece of gear with the perfect stats all the way to top rank is literally worse than a 1 in a million chance. At this point in time I believe there are only 4 pieces of gear AT top tank in the entire Trion version of the game across all servers NA and EU. Not to mention the materials required for this are so outlandishly expensive that your better off buying them with real money from the cash shop in bulk. So when I said each ticket cost thousands, I still wasn't kidding.

OK so say you don't want to get the absolute best gear in the game, say you want 3-4 steps down. That is still crafted gear, and one set will cost you in the hundreds of thousands of in game gold, which if your patient, can be obtained easily in time. Lots of time and probably a subscription. If you want to get the best gear obtained through other means, that would be the best dungeon gear, which is 7 steps down from the best. The difference in one step is a minor increase stats, but since combat is entirely based on numbers, even minor stats make a HUGE difference in combat.

It seems like this is a crafting game first, and a PvP game second.  PvP and PvE are just something where you can show off what you did in crafting and gathering.  And it's not a solo crafter's game.  It takes a guild or family with some trust and cooperation (and unselfishness) for everyone to gear up.

I am actually on the fence, now.  I may subscribe after all.  (Need labor points!)

You... could also consider the multitude of games coming out with crafting systems innovations, if you have not.  Always good to have options!

I am staring Elite:Dangerous, too.  I need some playtime to say for certain, but I anticipate it being one of my favorite games ever.

I'm positive about ArcheAge mainly because I've gone into it with low expectations.   I want to see how far I can develop my wealth without ever buying an Apex.   Just  Patron sub and developing one profession at a time.

AA PvP and PVE are 10 years outdated.  Very dull and boring.   An economy simulator with a combat minigame.

I tried it. I didn't really enjoy myself. Combat was dull, the economy is overwhelmingly confusing, as are tradeskills. It has a, "hurry up and wait" system when it comes to doing any tradeskills.

After a veteran player of the game told me that the game is like a mix between WoW and Farmville, I immediately uninstalled.

I didn't know it goes full PvP. le sigh

I'm looking for a more PvE-centric type MMO but not one where you are basically forced to group/raid to etc.  In ESO I haven't been able to play as much so I've fallen behind and just picked back up after release of Thieves Guild but still no raids as I haven't grouped much with anyone.  Makes me miss the glory days in Rift lol.

Pyre,

Have you tried GW2? The nice thing about GW2 is you can play it as much or as little as you want, and still remain just as competitive as everyone else.  Even though it has raids, you don't have to raid at all to have the best gear.  The same is true for it's dungeons.  The best gear is crafted gear that takes a very reasonable amount of time/resources to make (not too easy, but not too hard, and there is no rng involved).  The rarest gear (legendary gear) is basically a cosmetic upgrade to the ascended gear you craft.  Both types of gear have the exact same stats.  The legendary gear looks cooler, and allows you to change the stats on the fly, whereas the ascended gear takes a bit of resources to change the stats.  Once you craft your ascended gear, you are done, as the stat caps haven't changed in the 3 years I have been playing.  What you do spend a lot of time doing is changing the look of your gear, which is done independent of the gear.  Once you learn a skin, you can apply it to any piece of gear you have.  For example, you can make a level 1 sword look like a level 80 legendary weapon.  So stuff like raiding, dungeon crawling, etc., is mainly done to look cooler and have fun, not to remain competitive.

The crafting system is large, but not that hard to learn, and the economy is very robust.  There is a wide variety of PvE activities, especially after hitting level 80.  Some of the more enjoyable PVE activities are zone wide events which everyone drives forward into a climatic meta-event with some huge boss. GW2 also has WvW, which is similar to Cyrodiil in ESO, just not quite as big.  There is also PvP, which is done in separate arenas.  Everyone in PvP is normalized to the same stat caps, so you can go in there with a naked level 1 and compete on an equal footing with a level 80.  The game has no subscription fee (not even optional), and the cash shop has purely cosmetic and convenience type items.  You can try the game for free, but it you are serious about it, you will definitely want to buy it to remove all the limitations.

Maybe I'll re-check GW2.  I already own it but lost interest as I skated through the solo PvE stuff very quickly and the group dungeons were waaaaay OP.  Has that issue been fixed? Is there housing now by chance? LOL

Pyre, the housing in GW2 is still solo instance based.  The dungeons aren't fixed as far as I know, but they do have a raid thing going.

Honestly, ESO is very group non-centric outside a few areas, and I hate that it isn't optimized for my hardware.

I'm still looking around at other upcoming MMOs and hoping, but for now it seems my best choices are ones far in the future for PvE, or ones which have more PvP but also more restrictions to mitigate the abject gankfest.

AA... yeah, crafting without paying a sub is more painful than the mountainside and forest leveling of getting a rank up in GW2 by far!  Considering that GW2 is one of the very few I lost patience with crafting in...
